Ikue Mori is a drummer, electronic musician, composer, and designer born in Tokyo, Japan, and based in New York City. Using digital processing, a laptop computer, and repurposed elements of electronic drum equipment, Mori creates rhythmic and ambient soundscapes distinguished by looping patterns and layered fragments of digital sound that introduce constant variability into her improvised performances. Originally the drummer for the seminal no wave band DNA, Mori’s early work featured propulsive rhythms influenced by Japanese taiko drumming. She later transitioned from acoustic percussion to digital performance, redefining the role of percussion in improvisation and expanding the possibilities of machine-based music.
