Allan Sekula was an American artist and writer who worked across film, photography, archives, and criticism. Born in Erie, Pennsylvania, he lived most of his life in Los Angeles and the surrounding regions of southern California. His work aimed to bridge the gap between conceptual and documentary practices, focusing on economic and social themes ranging from family life, unemployment, maritime labour, and the military-industrial complex. While questioning many documentary conventions, Sekula considered photography as a social practice, answerable to the world and its conflicts. Sekula’s archive is held at the Getty Research Institute, Los Angeles; and his library is held at the Clark Art Institute, Williamstown.
