Michael Fernandes is a multimedia artist and art educator born in Trinidad and based in Halifax, Canada. While trained as a painter, he works in performance, video, sculpture, installation, drawing, and text. Using everyday materials to blur the boundary between life and art, his work often directly addresses the viewer, inviting audiences to participate in its making. Since the 1970s, Fernandes has taught at NSCAD University, and in 2020 he was the recipient of the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts.
