Xinwei Che

Bio:

Xinwei Che is an artist based between her home-country of Singapore, and on the traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Skwxwú7mesh, and səl̓ílwətaʔɬ Nations (Vancouver, Canada). She has a material-centred, temporal practice that attends to the rhythms of material movements to expand time and resist easy commodification. Che performs and creates installations with raw clay, water, and traditional Chinese medicinal herbs. As she engages with material gestures repeatedly over several days, weeks, or months, she creates work that is laborious but ephemeral. Influenced by the Zen philosophy of mushin, which refers to an openness to the present unhindered by ego-centred prejudices, she invites viewers to consider change as the necessary release of tension trapped beneath the surface—ruptures that allow new possibilities to arise.
