Jim Shaw is an artist based in Los Angeles, United States whose practice across painting, drawing, and sculpture. Mining the detritus of twentieth-century popular culture, he juxtaposes imagery appropriated from comic books, vintage advertisements, pulp novels, protest posters, record sleeves, and religious iconography with images of friends and family to construct uncanny worlds that tap into the cultural subconscious. His interest in American pop culture also informs his long-standing practice of collecting amateur paintings sourced from secondhand shops, flea markets, and online auctions. In addition to his visual art, Shaw was a founding member of the Detroit proto-punk band Destroy All Mothers.
