As part of the Vancouver International Jazz Festival, join us for a discussion with the Brooklyn-based multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily moderated by the vocalist, composer, and ethnomusicologist Julia Úlehla.
Shahzad Ismaily is a musician, composer, and sound engineer based in Brooklyn, United States. Born to Pakistani immigrant parents, he grew up in a wholly bicultural household. Exploring improvisation, tonal shifts. and rhythmic movement, Ismaily’s work incorporates electric bass, drums, percussion, guitar, synthesizers, and all manner of sound-makers procured in life’s travels. He is the founder of Figure 8 Recording.
Julia Úlehla is a vocalist, composer, and ethnomusicologist based in Vancouver, Canada. Having worked across avant-garde and new music contexts, Úlehla’s research focuses on traditional song from Slovácko, Czech Republic through a combination of ethnography, archival research, structural analysis, and the physical embodiment of song.
