George Sawchuk

Bio:

George Sawchuk was a self-taught artist who lived and worked in Fanny Bay, Canada. After an industrial accident ended his career as a labourer, he turned to sculpture, developing a lifelong practice. His work ranges from portable assemblages of found objects to carvings and site-specific interventions in the forest surrounding his Vancouver Island home. Drawing on a Duchampian approach to found materials, Sawchuk is best known for his wooden books inscribed with handwritten aphorisms placed in the notches of trees.
