Dara Birnbaum is a video and installation artist based in New York City, United States. Recognized as one of the first artists to use appropriated television imagery as a subversive strategy, her work primarily explores the ideological and aesthetic aspects of the mass media to deconstruct its power. In her videos and multimedia installations, Birnbaum uses both low- and high-end video technology to critique the mythologies of culture, history, gender, and memory.
