Brion Gysin was a painter, writer, sound poet, and performance artist born in Taplow, England and based between Vancouver, Canada; Tangier, Morocco; New York City, United States; and Paris, France. His often collaborative practice involved the use of the cut-up technique, which was further developed by his friend, novelist William S. Burroughs. With the engineer Ian Sommerville, Gysin developed the Dreamachine, a flickering light art device designed to be viewed with the eyes closed to induce hallucinatory states.
