Ulay was a German artist who lived and worked in Amsterdam, The Netherlands and Ljubljana, Slovenia. His practice operated at the intersection of photography, performance, and body art, exploring ideas of the body, self-portraiture, gender, participation, and time. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, Ulay began a long-term collaboration with performance artist Marina Abramović. Together, their works explored identity and the physical limits of the mind and body. Ulay is represented by Richard Saltoun Gallery, London/Rome/New York.
