Gamelan Madu Sari

Description:

Gamelan Madu Sari is an ensemble founded by members of the Vancouver Community Gamelan Society. After Expo 86, the Javanese gamelan in residence at the Indonesian Pavilion, Gamelan Kyahi Madusari (“The Venerable Essence of Honey”), was donated to Simon Fraser University, galvanizing the development of a community-based group. Under the early direction of Western Front founder and SFU music professor Martin Bartlett, the ensemble began studying and performing both traditional and newly composed music, Javanese dance, shadow plays, and multimedia works. The ensemble has had numerous members and collaborators over the years and have released recorded albums of original music.
