Location:

Vancouver Art Gallery

Description:

From Apr 20 to May 21, 1979, the Vancouver Art Gallery presented an exhibition titled Pacific Rim / Slow Scan. The month-long project featured a series of slow-scan television (SSTV) broadcasts that made use of NASA’s satellite ATS-1 to transmit images between countries in the Pacific Rim. The public was invited to participate in daily viewing programs and weekly workshops.

Video documentation shows Bill Bartlett sending a slow scan transmission, followed by an introduction to SSTV by Hank Bull and a demonstration of how the technology transmits live music.

Pacific Rim / Slow Scan was coordinated by Bill Bartlett of Direct Media Association, and video program curator Jo-Anne Birnie Danzker, the Department of Communication Studies at Simon Fraser University, the Telecommunications Research Group, and the Pan-Pacific Education and Communication Experiments by Satellite.

Video documentation is available upon request.
