Backup portrays the lifestyles of two women played by Kate Craig and Margaret Dragu, intercut with a suspense murder drama that takes place in a finishing school. Filmed and produced at Western Front during Dragu’s month-long artist residency, the work comprises five chapters (or, “modes”). The narrative deals with street-class girls, working-class domestics, middle-class urban renewal scientists, and upper-class debutantes.
A number of Western Front core members and collaborators make appearances in the video including Lin Bennett, Hank Bull, Helen Clarke, Jane Ellison, Peter Fraser, David Gibbons, Carol Hackett, Suzanne Ksinan, Monica Holden-Lawrence, Judith Marcuse, Eric Metcalfe, Sid Morosoff, Bayard Palmer, Patrick Ready, Jeanette Reinhardt, Barbara Shapiro, Robert Young, and Elizabeth Zimmer. The work also features image stills by Paul Wong, and sound by Hank Bull and Rick Ward.
