Description:
Different/Diverse brought together European video artists from the United Kingdom, Finland, Estonia, and Italy to explore notions of normalcy and the abnormal. Sometimes to act unnaturally helps to focus on the reasons for our everyday acts, our "normal" life and to discover new ways of thinking and creating different perspectives. What is not normal can be not only abnormal—already a pathological territory—but also different, or diverse. Artists included Graham Fagen, Douglas Gordon, Gun Holmström, Kai Kaljo, Paolo Ravalico Scerri, Giovanni Rizzoli, Terry Smith, and Roi Vaara.
This exhibition was produced by Nuova Icona in Venice, Italy and was collaboratively presented in Vancouver between Western Front and grunt gallery.
As part of the project, Western Front presented two video installations: Douglas Gordon’s single-channel work, A Moments Silence (For Someone Close to You) and Terry Smith’s three-channel work, Unnatural Acts.
Video documentation is available upon request.
Curated by Vitto Urbani and Terry Smith.
Western Front is a non-profit artist-run centre in Vancouver.
