Sound Travels: Global Internet Exchange

Nov 15 — 16, 2002
Field:

Exhibition, Program

Location:

H.R. Macmillan Planetarium, Vancouver

Description:

This two-day international streaming improvised concert featured Vancouver-based pianist Paul Plimley and (gu)zheng player Mei Han performing virtually with musicians in New York and San Diego, United States; Melbourne, Australia; Tokyo, Japan; Vienna, Austria; and Toulouse, France.

It took place at the H.R. MacMillan Planetarium, with a backdrop of stars that mixed music and metaphor. The challenges of this ambitious project (line delays, time differences, and disparate access to technological resources) contrasted with the utopian aspirations of early internet hype and mingled with our belief that music can communicate across the boundaries of language and culture.
