Sound Travels: Global Internet Exchange

Description:

This two-day international streaming improvised concert featured Vancouver-based pianist Paul Plimley and (gu)zheng player Mei Han performing virtually with musicians in New York, San Diego, Melbourne, Tokyo, Vienna, and Toulouse.

It took place at the H.R. MacMillan Planetarium, with a backdrop of stars that mixed music and metaphor. The challenges of line delays, time differences, and disparate access to technological resources contrasted with the utopian aspirations and hype of the early internet and mingled with our belief that music can communicate across the boundaries of language and culture.

Sound Travels was part of WIENCOUVER 2000, a series of projects focused on exchange and telematic art between artists in Vancouver and Vienna.
