Western Front hosted the North American premiere screening of the eighth edition of Infermental.
Initiated by Hungarian filmmakers Gábor Bódy and Verushka Bódy, Infermental was an international videocassette magazine that published video works and trailers. The concept of a magazine on videotape was originally inspired by the experience of sending tapes through the mail to get past the Iron Curtain in order to facilitate communication about art.
Appearing annually with a total running time between four and six hours, each issue of Infermental was compiled and edited in a different city. The project involved ten issues, based in Berlin and Hamburg, Germany; Budapest, Hungary; Lyon, France; Rotterdam, the Netherlands; Vancouver, Canada; Buffalo, US; Tokyo, Japan; Wien, Austria; and Osnabrück, Germany / Skopje, North Macedonia.
The Infermental VIII was developed in Tokyo in 1987, and subtitled “In the Afterglow of TV Land.” It featured seventy-three contributors from over fifteen countries. This chapter was edited by Keiko Sei and Alfred Birnbaum (who was in attendance at Western Front for the screening), with supervisors Mike Hentz and Hank Bull.
Following the premiere in the Grand Luxe Hall, Infermental 8 was available for viewing in the library from March 13 to 24, 1989.
