Description:

Western Front hosted New York-based saxophonist and composer Darius Jones for a residency in which he wrote his first concert-long composition for strings, The Vancouver Suite

While in residence, Jones presented at the eleventh annual International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation colloquium Agile Futures: Approaching Improvisation, hosted in the Grand Luxe Hall. He also performed alongside Vancouver based musicians Angelica Sanchez, Peggy Lee, and Dylan van der Schyff at The Ironworks as part of the 2019 TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival.

Jones’s work on The Vancouver Suite continued in 2022 during a later residency at Western Front in which he recorded and performed the composition in a series of concerts and open rehearsals in the Grand Luxe Hall.

Presented in partnership with Coastal Jazz & Blues Society and the International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation, and with support from the Government of Canada and SOCAN Foundation.

Western Front is a non-profit artist-run centre in Vancouver.
