Melody McKiver’s hour-long performance in the Grand Luxe Hall included work from their 2017 release Reckoning EP, as well as other compositions that incorporated viola, live looping, and keyboard. Between pieces, McKiver shared anecdotes about each song and insight into their process of negotiating their Western classical training with Anishinaabe musical traditions. To close the concert, McKiver performed a piece created in collaboration with filmmaker Candy Renae Fox that incorporated projected video documenting bodies of water in Vietnam, Aotearoa (New Zealand), and Sioux Lookout, Canada.
Presented in collaboration with the Institute for Critical Indigenous Studies at the University of British Columbia, the Department of English at the University of Victoria, and HASTAC.
