Description:

Dutch Light: Textual Actions is a video work by Marshalore produced while in residence at Western Front. The twenty-two minute, single channel work builds on Marshalore’s book project of the same title that contains a suite of texts that follow photographed actions of an abandoned prison in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Emulating the techniques employed in Dutch Golden Age painting to produce theatrical contrasts of light and shadow, Marshalore superimposes floating layers of text and image to achieve a similar effect, expressing a personal infatuation with Dutch culture.

Dutch Light: Textual Actions features technical support from John Anderson, Donna Chisholm, Elizabeth Chitty, Jane Ellison, Stan Douglas, Al Maclachlan, David Ostrem, Hugh Poole, Elizabeth Vander Zaag, David Rahn, Patrick Ready, and Paul Wong.
