Description:
As part of a three-part research residency, Heidi Grundmann visited three artist-run centres in Canada: Studio XX (Montréal), InterAccess (Toronto), and Western Front.
She researched Western Front’s archives to create an online archive about Wiencouver, an imaginary place invented by Hank Bull that is the basis of a series of exchanges, visits, and events that have taken place between Vancouver and Vienna since 1979.
Wiencouver has used telephone, video-phone, fax machines, and Internet streaming technologies to connect artists at distant points. As one of the first ongoing projects of its kind, the history of Wiencouver provides an interesting background and context for future telematic works. A dinner, talk, and performance took place at the conclusion of her residency.
Western Front is a non-profit
artist-run centre in Vancouver.
We acknowledge the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations as traditional owners of the land upon which Western Front stands.
