Description:

Nite Music to Matins was an all-night concert with multiple musicians and two ambient sound installations. Musical forms that were traditionally played at specific times such as nocturnes, ragas, pathets, and matins were experienced in their intended settings; in the midnight or early morning hours, in addition to contemporary explorations reflecting the quietude and darkness between dusk and dawn.

The performers were Tandava, Rachel Iwaasa, Daniel Tones, Barry Truax, Gamelan Alligator Joy with Anis Wijastuti and Sutrisno Hartana, Ellen McIlwaine, Shubhendra Rao, Biplab Bhattacharya, David Millard, Earle Peach, Elliott Dainow, and Peter Alexander. Sound installations were created by Katharine Norman and Eric Hedekar in the EDAM studio.

Works included Morton Feldman’s Palais de Mari and Brian Cherney’s Quelquefois, à l’ombre de la nuit au lointain performed by Rachel Iwaasa; and Barry Truax’s Nightwatch performed by Daniel Tones. Ellen McIlwaine performed a sing-along version of the Bahamian folk song "I Bid You Goodnight.” David Millard, Earle Peach, Elliot Dainow, and Peter Alexander performed Gregorian chants.
