Description:
Silophone was a sonic occupation of Silo #5, an abandoned grain elevator in Montréal that was situated in one of the oldest industrial districts experiencing rapid redevelopment and gentrification.
[The User], the collaborative moniker of artists Thomas McIntosh and Emmanuel Madan, transformed Silo #5 into a musical instrument by installing microphones and loudspeakers inside four of the empty grain storage chambers. The public was able to submit sounds online on the website or via telephone. The contributed sounds reverberated through the structure’s astounding acoustics before being re-broadcasted to their senders.
Western Front hosted a special livestream of the Silophone feed accompanied by Diana Shearwood’s photo documentation of the silo’s interior.
Western Front is a non-profit artist-run centre in Vancouver.
