Pythagoras’ Ghost is an electroacoustic album by Martin Bartlett consisting of microtonal music based on the Table of Pythagoras, composed for four electronic wind instruments.
The album consists of eight tracks, presented in three parts: “Pythagoras’ Ghost,” “The Nautical Almanac,” and “The Arrival of Sir John Franklin in Paradise.” Together, these offer a meditation on the last cantos of Dante’s Inferno and Sir John Franklin’s expedition to the Northwest Passage. These events provoke a number of ideas: the relationship between nature and civilization, the fragility of comfort, the encumbering baggage of civilization and our illusory trust in technology.
Recorded live in the Grand Luxe Hall, the album was produced as part of Western Front’s 20th anniversary.
