Interplay: Computer Dialogue/Interactive Communications

Apr 1, 1979
Field:

Workshop

Time:

9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Description:

Bill Bartlett coordinated a computer networking experiment that dealt with the feasibility of ongoing interactive communications: time, space, and dialogue. Participants discussed a long range focus for computer communications, how to use such a system (interaction versus unilateral thinking), and “electronic mail” and its effects on communications. Most importantly, the workshop provided the opportunity to experiment with such technology hands-on.

Mr. Ola Juvkam-Wold at the Data Terminal Mart (365 E Broadway, Vancouver) assisted in installing a hard-print terminal for the duration of the experiment, which enabled Western Front participants to communicate with twenty-two other centres across North America, Australia, and Europe. Through a special arrangement with the I.P. Sharp Associates Computer Communications Network (IPSA), participants were able to access their telecommunications service for free.

Presented as part of the Computer Communications Workshop hosted by the Computer Culture Expositions, Toronto; with support from IPSA.
