Description:

Following a seven-month period from October 1977 to May 1978, Tom Burrows made a research and documentation tour of squatting settlements in Europe, Egypt, India, Thailand, and Hong Kong. He presented a lecture accompanied by a collection of slides that demonstrated his findings. Defining squatting as “the habitation of dwelling structures without obtaining legal authorization from a centralized government agency,” Burrows’s presentation reflected on the history of squatting, its presence as a major factor in world housing, and how it can be implemented as a model for housing and cultural improvement.
