Generated Choreographies

Field:

Workshop

Location:

Grand Luxe Hall, Western Front

Time:

11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Description:

While in residence, Nina Davies led a performance workshop that explored movement in relation to generated videos, deep fakes, and AI interrupted memes. Through a series of choreographic exercises, the workshop supported a group of twelve participants to explore how generated footage can be simulated by the body rather than computational devices.

To begin the workshop, Davies introduced her practice, including screening previous works in which she has used the body to mimic digital processes. Following this, she demonstrated and taught the group a short repertoire of movements drawn from popular generated videos found on TikTok and other shortform video platforms.

Participants then broke into smaller groups to create their own choreographic phrases inspired by generated videos of their choosing. To conclude the workshop, participants presented what they made and collectively discussed their experiences of using their bodies in this way.
