Description:
Hayley Newman’s Invisible Crowds was a video installation documenting a gathering of fifty volunteer riders on a public bus in Vancouver. Filmed from the back of the bus, the two-hour, live-size looping projection transformed Western Front’s gallery into an immersive extension of the bus itself. This environment allowed Newman to simultaneously position both the riders and the audience as the subjects of the work. The process of developing Invisible Crowds also explored how a staged event can unfold within an unpredictable, uncontrolled environment.
Presented with support by the British Council.
Western Front is a non-profit artist-run centre in Vancouver.
