Description:
This concert featured a thirty-minute set by the trio nechewagan, followed by Aiko Shimada and her band.
Nechewagan means “good friends who stick together” in Plains Cree. Sandy Scofield, Lisa Sazama, and Tracy Whattam performed their vocals in Cree, Algonquin, and English with hand drums and rattles; sharing the stories and oral traditions tied to the songs.
Aiko Shimada sang original songs in English and Japanese, and played guitar with accompaniment on cello, drums, and trumpet. Together Shimada and her band performed a ninety-minute set that incorporated elements of jazz, progressive rock, and folk.
This event was part of t a k e a b r o a d v i e w, a music program and festival of musical explorations by women.
