Description:
Western Front hosted three screenings of the first cut of Isabelle Pauwels’s 2012 video work LIKE…/ AND, LIKE / YOU KNOW / TOTALLY / RIGHT. Produced while in residence at Western Front and shot in the Grand Luxe Hall, the piece is composed of a sequence of five videos that feature performances by Pauwels’s sister, and Western Front core members Hank Bull, Glenn Lewis, and Eric Metcalfe. The hour-long work offers an intersubjective meditation on the legacy of performances and personas created at Western Front in the 1970s and 1980s. Secret childhood clubs are invoked alongside the copiously documented history of Western Front to complicate notions of memory and the archive, of being an insider or an outsider. LIKE…/ AND, LIKE / YOU KNOW / TOTALLY / RIGHT. continues Pauwels’s ongoing concern with narrative, employing repetition, cliché, and satire to wrestle with the oppressive force of stories and storytellers.
Western Front is a non-profit artist-run centre in Vancouver.
