David Buchan

Bio:

David Buchan was a multidisciplinary artist based in Toronto, Canada. He rose to prominence in the 1970s and 1980s as a vocal and vibrant member of the city’s art and queer communities, and was closely associated with General Idea. He also served as manager of Art Metropole. Buchan’s practice was primarily performance-based, combining elements of fashion, photography, artists’ books, text, and video in multimedia productions. Drawing on both autobiography and fiction, his work frequently parodied advertising campaigns as a means of critiquing popular culture and consumerism. Across this practice, he also adopted the persona Lamonte del Monte, a recurring figure through which he staged these explorations.
