Cabaret Vulgare was a two-night cabaret variety show presented in celebration of Western Front’s 20th anniversary. Riffing on the Dadaist Cabaret Voltaire, the program was hosted by Hank Bull and featured performance art, musical numbers, standup comedy, dance, and poetry by artists closely connected to Western Front. Each evening was divided into three sets, and opened with screenings of video excerpts from Western Front’s archive.
Performers included Stephen Anthony, Warren Arcand, Anna Banana, Peter Bingham, Gary Bourgeois, Lorna Boschman, DB Boyko, Nikita Carter, Peter Culley, Peter Courtemance, Gerald Creede, Margaret Dragu, Jill Fraser, Lori Freedman, Colin Griffiths, Grant Gregson, Annie Hallet and the Hot Goddess Sisters, Kate Hammett-Vaughan, François Houle, Tricia Keith, Michael Louw, Phil McCrum, Crissy Red, Renee Rodin, Ron Samworth, Catriona Strang, and The Vulgares. The cabaret house band included Hank Bull on piano, Jim Munroe on violin, and Paul Plimley on drums, among others.
Both nights of Cabaret Vulgare were broadcast live on WENR Radio and TV by the Wiener Twins, Bobbi Kozinuk and Brice MacNeil.
