Cabaret Vulgare was a two-night cabaret variety show presented in celebration of Western Front’s 20th anniversary. Riffing on the Dadaist Cabaret Voltaire, the program was hosted by Hank Bull and featured performance art, musical numbers, standup comedy, dance, and poetry by artists closely connected to Western Front. Each evening was divided into three sets, and opened with screenings of video excerpts from Western Front’s archive.
The first set of night two included a lip sync performance by Steven Anthony; a vocal duet by DB Boyko and Kate Hammett-Vaughan; a reading by Margaret Dragu; poetry by Catriona Strang with musical accompaniment by François Houle; dance by Peter Bingham; and a standup comedy routine by Lorna Boschman.
The second set included a performance by Phil McCrum and Gerald Creede; a solo performance by jazz singer June Katz; a light and dance performance by Jill Fraser and collaborators; a song and dance routine by The Vulgares; a musical performance by Michael Louw; original songs for piano and voice by Grant Gregson; and a musical monologue by Crissy Red.
The third set featured a theatrical monologue by Warren Arcand; a dance routine by Annie Hallat and the Hot Sister Goddesses; music by Colin Griffiths with the house band; a noise set by Peter Courtemance and Bobbi Kozinuk; Burt Bacharach covers by Peter Culley; and concluded with a solo tenor sax performance by Lori Freedman.
The event was broadcast live on WENR Radio and TV by the Wiener Twins, Bobbi Kozinuk and Brice MacNeil, who provided commentary between sets.
