String Theory: John Oliver and Volute

Nov 5, 2005
Field:

Concert, Performance

Location:

Grand Luxe Hall, Western Front

Time:

8:00 p.m.

Description:

This was the second event of the String Theory: The Future of the Stringed Instrument concert series.

John Oliver performed his composition, Nylong Symphony, a spectral voyage across centuries of sound generated by classical guitar and Turkish oud, fed live through a computer synthesizer.

Volute, the string duo of Tom Swafford (violin) and Nathan Levine (bass), performed their spontaneous music that verged on the sublime, while continuously teetering on the fence dividing melody and noise.
