Description:

眼保健操 (Yan Bao Jian Cao) was an interactive concert led by Yu Su and Scott Gailey, presented as part of Slow Wave—a series of sound-based events and gatherings organized by Gabi Dao while in residence at Western Front.

Translating to “eye exercises,” 眼保健操 (Yan Bao Jian Cao) was inspired by a set of eye massage techniques Su was required to perform twice daily as a student growing up in China. Targeting acupuncture points around the eyes, the exercises were designed to alleviate eye strain and improve vision. Throughout the forty-five minute performance, Su led the audience through this routine with verbal cues accompanied by a live six-channel musical arrangement of electronic instruments and percussion. To enhance the listening experience, audience members were invited to surround the musicians on the floor of the Grand Luxe Hall. Handouts designed by Su with instructions for the eye exercises were also made available to reference throughout the performance.

Video documentation of this performance is available upon request.
