Description:
Presented as part of the exhibition
Asymmetrical Response, Olivia Meek (DJ regularfantasy) performed a thirty-minute set drawn from a collection of 839 trance LPs that were purchased from retired electronic dance music DJ Joshua Ryan and meticulously catalogued by artist Cory Arcangel and his studio over two years. Performed in the Grand Luxe Hall, the records were recontextualized from their intended rave venues to a traditional seated concert setting. This shift teased out the role of time, place, and personal preference in the history and experience of electronic music.
The entire record collection and corresponding catalogue, together titled
AUDMCRS Underground Dance Music Collection of Recorded Sound (2011), were displayed in the gallery as part of
Asymmetrical Response. Taking on an additional context within the space of the exhibition,
AUDMCRS operated as both a sculpture and performance that further interrogated the role of users, populism, and taste in assigning historic and cultural value to media.
Video documentation of this performance is available upon request.
