Description:
This iteration of Scrivener’s Monthly featured a presentation of Misdirected Kiss (2016), a performative lecture by Martine Syms.
The hour-long multimedia presentation unfolded alongside a mirrored projection of Syms’s Macbook Pro as she layered windows with images, videos, text, and audio files. Collapsing citations from cinema, critical theory, popular culture, the internet, and family history, Misdirected Kiss examines aspects of paralinguistics and the performance of speech as it relates to constructions of Black identity.
Scrivener’s Monthly was a series of public presentations that explored the space between material practices and spoken words. Set alongside exhibitions at Western Front, this experiment in “not publishing” involved readings, performances, and other articulations.
Video documentation of this event is available upon request.
