Description:

Acoustic Cartographies was a project presented in collaboration with the School of Communication at Simon Fraser University (SFU) and the Department of Geography at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Beginning in 2011, the project brought together an interdisciplinary team of undergraduate students to explore the urban geography of Vancouver through sound.

Students were divided into three groups and prompted to listen to the relationship between gender and public space; ecology and perceptions of public health; and youth, inequality, and the built environment, to create audio compositions using field recordings collected throughout the Lower Mainland.

This event presented an afternoon of sound, mapping, and critical discussion from SFU and UBC geography professors.
