After Just Now

After Just Now was a screening of 1990s video art curated by Ken Anderlini. It featured work by Jennifer Baum, Dana Claxton, Mike Hoolboom, Istvan Kantor, Paul Lee, Jane Milroy, Steve Sanguedolce, and Kika Thorne.

While Anderlini saw the directions taken by these experimental media artists in the 1990s as characteristically postmodern, he cautioned against using postmodern as a catch-all. Instead, he emphasized that postmodern approaches to media production during this decade, particularly the convergence of sociopolitical concerns with experimental image-making aesthetics, revitalized cinematic form by acknowledging both its political potency and its semiotic uncertainty. This in turn, resisted a return to Modernist preoccupations with the ineffable or the universal, which Anderlini described as “an empty bourgeois culture afraid of its history.”

The works were also presented in an experimental format as a synchronous multi-channel screening.
