Description:
An artist talk by Meredith Bates, presented as part of Agile Futures: Approaching Improvisation, the eleventh annual International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation colloquium. Bates’s hour-long presentation explored the value of empathy and joy in making music in the moment, the neurological effects of improvisation, and the ways in which non-verbal forms of expression can facilitate inclusivity. Following a solo improvisation on violin, Bates was joined by pianist Chris Gestrin and cellist Emma Augustsson to perform two improvisations together. Her talk concluded with a question and answer period.
Presented in collaboration with the International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation at the University of British Columbia and Coastal Jazz & Blues Society; and with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, the Government of Canada, the British Columbia Arts Council, the Province of British Columbia, the City of Vancouver, and SOCAN Foundation.
