Description:
This commissioned performance by David Bateman took Giacomo Puccini’s Madama Butterfly opera and revised it as a queer and drag performance of intersecting subject positions as a gay white Canadian man. With personal narration and live singing, and an eye for humour, tragedy, and costume, Bate attempted to locate himself within a complex realm of race, gender, and sexuality.
This event was co-produced with Centre A and Vancouver Opera’s Views of Japan program.
Western Front is a non-profit artist-run centre in Vancouver.
