Description:
Blocking was a performance for film by General Idea that staged a rehearsal for the 1984 Miss General Idea Pageant. Dissolving the boundaries between artist and actor, artifice and reality, Blocking featured eighty-four extras in the role of “The Audience,” with fully choreographed entrances, exits, and reactions to the absurdist beauty pageant that ensued. The work featured performances by General Idea members Granada Venne, Jorge Zontal, Felix Partz, and AA Bronson; with appearances by Sandy Stagg, Myra Peanut (Mary Beth Knechtal), Keith Donovan, and Jackie Oasis.
Blocking was presented with lighting by Kate Craig; sound by Martin Bartlett; music by Hank Bull, Andy Graffiti, Annie Segal, and Tom Tilliman; stills by Marcel Idea (Michael Morris), Sally Peanut (Warren Knechtel), and Eric Metcalfe; and video support by Glenn Lewis, Paul Wong, and Video Inn. The work was filmed by Byron Black and edited by Vincent Trasov.
