Each of the four pieces performed by Five of Five emphasized different approaches to structured improvisation. The first piece made use of graphic scores, and was constructed in a way that exposed the parallel between closed vertical pitch structures and the timbre of the music, generated by various combinations of instruments. The second work focused on orchestration with particular attention paid to dividing the musicians into smaller groups in an attempt to focus on new sounds and colours. The third piece was stylistically based on different jazz idioms, and the final work featured each performer as a soloist accompanied by the other players in the group.
Five of Five was an ensemble organized by Tom Hajdu (percussion), and featured Barry Barrington (piano), Brett Dowler (trumpet), Graham Howell (saxophone), Ward Hunting (bassoon), Finn Manniche (cello), Nancy Riecken (flute), and Rod Yates (tuba).
