Location:

Description:

Hystery was a reading presented as part of Women and Words, a conference founded by Daphne Marlat and Betsy Warland that brought together female writers from across Canada working in both English and French. The title of the event was a portmonteau of “history” and "hysteria,” and featured a lineup of four female poets from Winnipeg, Toronto, and Montréal who explored embodied poetics.

Lola Lemire Tostevin read a selection of poems from her collections Colour of her Speech (1982) and excerpts from her novel Double Standards (1985), which explores the intertextuality between French and English, masculine and feminine, and narrative and poetic forms. France Théoret read a selection of poems in French, with two English translations read by Hystery host Daphne Marlatt. Smaro Kamboureli read from her book In the Second Person (1985), and dub poet Lillian Allen closed the evening with a spoken word performance.
