In 1980, Hank Bull and Kate Craig spent a year travelling to Japan, Southeast Asia, India, Africa, and Europe to connect with other artists and explore the possibilities and problems of cross-cultural communication. Upon returning to Vancouver, Bull and Craig presented World Shadows, a shadow play that demonstrated new performance and storytelling techniques developed while studying shadow theatre in Bali, Indonesia under master daling I Wayan Wija.
