Description:

Tom Sherman’s video East on the 401 documents a twenty-eight-minute drive along King’s Highway 401 in Ontario from a car driven by artist Robin Collyer. The fixed position of the camera on the dashboard and ensuing movement within its field of vision simulates the experience of “television trance” and “highway hypnosis”—two altered states of consciousness that occur at the junction of extreme focus and disassociation. The work features sound by Hank Bull and was previously titled "You Can’t Watch Television and Drive a Car at the Same Time."

Video documentation is available upon request.
