Description:

Western Front hosted the North American premiere screening of the eighth edition of Infermental

Initiated by Hungarian filmmakers Gábor Bódy and Verushka Bódy, Infermental was an international videocassette magazine that published video works and trailers. The concept of a magazine on videotape was originally inspired by the experience of sending tapes through the mail to get past the Iron Curtain in order to facilitate communication about art.

Appearing annually with a total running time between four and six hours, each issue of Infermental was compiled and edited in a different city. The project involved ten issues, based in Berlin and Hamburg, Germany; Budapest, Hungary; Lyon, France; Rotterdam, the Netherlands; Vancouver, Canada; Buffalo, US; Tokyo, Japan; Wien, Austria; and Osnabrück, Germany / Skopje, North Macedonia.

Infermental 7 was developed in Buffalo, New York in 1988. Spanning five-hours, the screening presented the work of fifty-eight artists from seventeen countries, selected from over 400 submissions. Sponsored by Hallwalls, this edition was edited by Chris Hill, Tony Conrad, and Pieter Weibel, with the consultation of Rotraut Pape of Infermental Lyon.
