Field:

Talk

Location:

Grand Luxe Hall, Western Front

Time:

7:00 p.m.

Description:

For Scrivener’s Monthly, Jalal Toufic presented “The Dancer’s Two Bodies” (2015), a lecture considering the relationship between dance and cinema.

Toufic’s talk was presented in partnership with the School for Contemporary Arts Audain Visual Artist in Residence Program and SFU Galleries, as part of Walid Raad’s exhibition Sweet Talk: Commissions (Beirut 1994).

Scrivener’s Monthly was a series of public presentations that explored the space between material practices and spoken words. Set alongside exhibitions at Western Front, this experiment in “not publishing” involved readings, performances, and other articulations.

A yellow fold out sign is displayed on hardwood. A mirror to the signs right reverses its text. The sign gives information pertaining to the upcoming Scrivener’s Monthly talk with Jalal Toufic.
Jalal Toufic stands well lit at a lectern. In front of him is an open laptop, a book, and a glass of water. He wears a sand coloured cardigan. The first few buttons are undone to reveal a plaid button up underneath.
A projection screen displays an image from a film. The people in the background of the scene are dressed in period clothes. A man in the foreground reaches toward flowers at a flower stand. To the side of the screen, Jalal Toufic stands at a lectern with both hands raised gesturally.
Jalal Toufic stands in front of a double microphone stand with his hands raised. On the lectern in front of him is an open laptop, two pairs of glasses, and wine glass filled with water.
