Description:

A concert by electro-pop duo Matmos, presented as part of Wave Equation—a series that featured electronic-based artists exploring live performance software and analogue synthesis.

The evening opened with two thirty-minute opening performances: Bully Fae presented a hybrid of spoken word and stand-up comedy to an electronic soundtrack, and Jeff Carey performed an experimental audiovisual set using a custom software-based electronic instrument accompanied by strobe lights.

Matmos presented a live performance of their composition Ultimate Care II (2016)—a work constructed entirely out of the sounds generated by a Whirlpool Ultimate Care II model washing machine. Dictated by the duration of a wash cycle, the thirty-eight-minute performance began by sourcing a garment from the audience to wash in the machine live on stage, and unfolded against projected video from the inside of the Whirlpool Ultimate Care II. Accompanied by electronics, Matmos played the machine like an instrument, amplifying the rhythmic, drone-based sounds from the wash cycle.

Presented with support from SOCAN Foundation and the Government of Canada.

Video documentation of this concert is available upon request.
