Exhibition

Description:

Oliver Laric and Aleksandra Domanovic presented a pop-up exhibition of recent works, including their video installation in-progress Shanzhai (山寨) Turbo. Developed while in residence at Western Front, the work takes its point departure from two words: “shanzhai” and “turbo”—terms that refer to imitation, copying, and the ongoing way in which images and objects are translated and appropriated across cultures. Using narration and an assemblage of images, the video investigates the presence of celebrity statues in Asia and Eastern Europe in relation to globalization, national identity, and popular culture.

To accompany the exhibition, Laric and Domonovic presented an artist talk on February 4, 2011.
