Description:
Charlotte Hug performed Anderwelten, a work for voice and viola inspired by ancient Celtic culture, conjuring worlds in limbo, non-worlds, worlds beyond, and worlds whose existence is still quite real for many Irish people. The work was developed in Rushbrooke, in the south of Ireland.
Anderwelten demonstrated Hug's “soft bow technique,” which combines sound mixtures of viola and Gaelic Celtic vocal lamentation traditions like “keening” and “caoineadh.” Among other sources, the sonic material which Hug translated into voice and viola was recorded by hydrophone underwater in the Atlantic Ocean, on the borderline of air and water, and in the air.
